Brian Witherspoon Signs Free Agent Deal With Jaguars

Stillman standout defensive back Brian Witherspoon, who went undrafted in the 2008 NFL Entry Draft, signed a three-year free-agent contract with the Jaguars. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“I’m upset that I didn’t get drafted, but I’m glad I ended up with Jacksonville,” Witherspoon said. “There was a lot of interest from other teams throughout the entire draft, but Jacksonville presented the best chance for me to start because they want me mainly on special teams. I was just wanted the best opportunity to play.”
The return specialist was projected between a fifth and seventh-round selection in the draft round pick and the highest rated defensive back from a Division II school. A 2007 preseason All-America choice, Witherspoon made 31 tackles, recorded two interceptions and added seven pass deflections as a cornerback in helping Stillman to a 7-4 record and fourth-place finish in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference final standings.
Witherspoon's ticket to a job in the NFL, though, looks to be embedded in his world-class speed and ability to return punts and kickoffs. Last season, 'Spoon ran back a kickoff and a punt return for a touchdown. During the last three seasons, he has six returns for touchdowns -- three on kickoffs, two on punts and one via an interception that covered 99 yards. Witherspoon also was named SIAC Male Track Athlete of the Year and First Team All-Conference in the 100-meter dash this past season.
